Welcome to Wildwoods and Homestead.
Beginning in 2014 with 10 acres of dense woods. Our young family started carving out our future.
Unable to afford contractor fees we applied for a small mortgage to purchase a raw treed acreage.
Initially by hand; all we had to show for our efforts in the first year was a roughly cleared driveway of sorts and a small opening for our house.
We applied for a self build mortgage and after many ups and downs and intense planning and pricing out materials to prove we could build it; the bank finally approved us.
The hardest parts began as we continued to cut back the wildwoods by hand and slowly build the homestead. We hired a man with a tractor to dig our foundation, this seemed exciting and quick. We were getting somewhere! But then the tedious nature of our endeavor set in.
From then on, it was just a father and son duo, building footings, pouring concrete, removing footings, building walls, raising walls, wiring in electrical… there was not a sub trade they did not learn in and out to finish the task at hand.
Now here we are in 2024 with 8 children and an expanding homestead. Still by hand. But slowly. Oh so slowly, taming the Wildwoods and turning it all into the Homestead with a lot of wild still in the mix.
Here you will find our Homesteading journey, recipes, frugal ways of living, gardening in a harsh climate, cultivating wild edibles, hunting, foraging, homeschooling, and much more. We hope you stay awhile and enjoy your time here.
